Flexible Work

December 12th, 2007 by Heidi

I saw an article in the headlines on the internet today re a study that shows that a flexible work life is good for your health. I’m so glad more and  more is coming out about stuff like that because I think society has gone so far overboard in the opposite direction that it is about time employers wake up to the fact that it is NOT healthy to work yourself to death and not have time for children and family.

The article states that people who are allowed to job share and work from hom, are more likely to make healthier lifestyle choices, for example, they tend to exercise more.  Employers will get much more productivity out of happy, healthy workers than those who have no time, flexibility and freedom to create  a more balanced existence. Money is important but money isn’t the only thing that is important. If you have money but you don’t have your health or time to enjoy it then the money is worthless!

Flexible scheduling is not just a woman’s issue, this is important for men as well. Men want and need time away from work and time to live healthfully as well.

I seriously see that there will be a shift with the technological age to the majority of people working from home. People really want that and I think it will come about sooner rather than later.

    I hear you!

It’s kind of weird because I work for the largest computer company in the world - and they still frown upon people working a lot from home. I think it’s a backwards view.

Some people even got engaged and said they were moving to another state to be with their fiance and they would work from home, and my company said “no”. So they either quit or lived separately from their spouse!

Flexibility is so critical for a balanced, healthy lifestyle. With my son, I really feel that I need to be around for him. I didn’t have kids to cart them off to daycare for someone else to raise!
