Healthy Eating Tips for Busy Moms
Heidi
Being busy and eating right really don’t mix. It takes more planning and effort to eat well and oftentimes, our healthy eating is put on a back burner because we are just to busy to deal with it. It’s a catch 22 because you don’t make the extra effort to eat right and then you have less energy to take care of your responsibilities. In the long run, your health declines and consequently your quality of life declines.
What are some things a busy mom can do to eat right and help her family to eat better? One of the main things is to plan ahead. Plan your dinners for a week in advance and make some things up ahead to have in the refrigerator and freeze.
If you need to go somewhere and will be gone for awhile, take a small cooler with some healthy snacks in it. If you need to, put a frozen bottle in it to keep your snacks cool and fresh. I regularly take things like apples, carrots, dried apricots and almonds. Dried apricots and almonds (get the raw ones, they are healthier) go together really well, pop a few almonds and an apricot in your mouth…yummy! Take food so you don’t end up hungry and looking for whatever junk you can find!
I will do some regular posts on the topic of healthy eating tips for busy moms so sign up so you can be made aware when new things post and send me your comments so I know what you need to find out more about.

I heard that there are foods that you think would be bad for you, but they are actually good for you in moderation. For example, I heard dark chocolate was good for you. I wonder if you can make a list of foods that are good for you but still good for your taste buds?

Well, thanks for the question, unfortunately I don’t think you will be thrilled with my answer because the only food I think that fits the category (truly in its unadulterated state) is fruit. Fruit tastes great and is good for you as well. If you buy really good tasting fruit, especially organic, it’s the best. There is nothing you have to do to it, in order for it to taste good. It is actually better raw than cooked and you don’t need to add anything to it.
Taste is acquired and can be relearned. We have a natural tendancy toward sweetness which is why we like candy when in fact it is fruit that we should actually be eating. If you like sweets like candy, cookies and so on, I would recommend completely giving it up. You do lose a craving for it.
If you don’t like many fruits alone, there are some things you can do to make them more palatable (I can’t imagine not liking a lot of fruits). I find cereal to be very unfilling and unsatisfying alone, but the way I make it it’s marvelous! I add several things, like sliced raw almonds, craisins (dried cranberries), blueberries and or banana. Pick several of those items to doctor up your cereal and it will be considerably more tasty, more nutritious and more satisfying!
You can also make like a fruit crisp or fruit crumble which isn’t optimal like eating the raw fruit alone, but it is certainly better than a fruit pie.

You can eat some dried fruit also but dried fruit is hightly concentrated and does have a lot of calories and should be used sparingly.
A few things I really like to do with dried fruit is: 1) put some in cereal, 2) eat dried apricots with a few almonds–great combo and 3) put an almond inside of a date–another great combo. Dates are alittle too sweet for me so the almond cuts some of the sweetness and makes it really great!
